Evaluating Service Impact

This workshop draws on the latest research and the best UK and international development practice to:

  • Move beyond traditional library performance measurement
  • Put the focus on the difference that services make to their users
  • See what key players want from library services
  • Show managers how to find out what needs to change to be more effective.

Better impact evaluation is crucial in assembling evidence to guide the development of services. It is even more crucial if the service is under threat: evidence of the effectiveness of services may help libraries to survive in the current economic climate.

This workshop introduces the main issues in evaluating impact and offers a staged process to help participants to find their way through the complexities of impact evaluation.

The event will be facilitated by David Streatfield.

David Streatfield is an Independent Impact Consultant to the Global Libraries Initiative funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and has acted in a similar capacity for the International Federation of Library Associations, the Global Impact Study (jointly funded by the Gates Foundation and the International Development Research Centre) and the UN Development Agency in Bulgaria. He contributed a series of Research Methods Masterclass columns to Information Research Watch International for more than seven years and has co-facilitated research methods courses for the Library and Information Research Group and for CILIP. With his colleague Sharon Markless, David is preparing a new edition of their book Evaluating the Impact of Your Library, to be published by Facet Publishing in 2012.
